Bee sponsorship for sustainable nature conservation

Start of shift in Weißenhorn: The Mayser bee colony has moved in.

It's buzzing and humming on the meadow behind the farmstead in Weißenhorn, where beefuture GmbH has its headquarters. There are about 20 bee hives right here on site, and about 900 more scattered all over Germany and in Austria. Unfortunately, you hear the buzzing less and less - since 1950, the number of bee colonies in Germany has decreased by more than 25 %.

Bee sponsorship for sustainable nature conservationOne of the Weißenhorn bee colonies has been collecting honey for Mayser since the beginning of May. With this sponsorship, our company is not only making a direct contribution to sustainable nature conservation in the sense of corporate social responsibility, but can also look forward to the sweet harvest in late summer: its own year-round honey from ecological beekeeping.

There is a lot of traffic at the entrance holes when our sign is attached to the beehive on the move-in date on 3 May. "A fully developed colony comprises up to 50,000 animals," explains farm manager Sven Ticks. "The collectors you see here still have about a week of bee life ahead of them. They cover up to five kilometres per flight, which of course costs energy."

The bees are looked after by professionals: all year round, the beekeepers from beefuture regularly check on the colonies, harvest the honey and, if necessary, treat the animals against diseases or pests such as the Varroa mite. In the course of the year, a colony produces up to 200 kg of honey. However, on average and depending on the summer, only about 15 kg is harvested; the rest is for our own use.

"The issue of environmental protection and sustainability concerns us all," says Julius Rummel, Managing Director of Mayser GmbH & Co. KG. "Whether in Lindenberg or in Ulm, anyone who is allowed to live and work in such beautiful surroundings should also be aware that we all share responsibility for preserving biodiversity."
